1 Samuel 16:7
7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
It is the insignificant that God raised not the intellectual or capable people. God raised the ordinary people to become mighty men of God.
Jesse the father of David must have been shocked to see his son David whom he neglected, anointed to ascend to the throne instead of the other sons who have been well trained in Saul’s army. Like Joseph who was almost killed by his brothers, astonished the world with his wisdom, David would have astounded everyone with his skill in the battle with Goliath whom the army of Israel feared.. When he killed Goliath many must have been astonished especially his brother who rebuked him for not looking after the sheep instead of thanking him for bringing the food.
It was God’s timing to illustrate His power through David to the whole world and its time to promote David who is after God’s heart.
How important it is to check our inward heart! God rewards us according to the measure of our heart.
After the anointing of David by Samuel, the spirit of the Lord departed from king Saul and the evil one began oppressing king Saul. So at the suggestion by his servants David found favour in Saul’s sight. 1 Sam 16.14-24. David was singled out because of his personality, Skilled in playing music, a man of war and prudent in speech. Verse 18.
How important is our character, timing and a heart after God seeking His ways always. These are the qualities God seek in promoting a man. Hence it is important to develop our character, have the spirit of discernment and disciplined in our skill. For some of you, I believe God is speaking to you that your promotion is due. Just be patient.
